In the end of 1881 after quarrel with the father, Van Gogh has lodged in the Hague. Some time he studied at known landscape writer Anton Mauve. Van Gogh's aggravated with shyness the excentric behaviour, has pushed away from it those who wished to help him. When it has left from it, the artist in the end of 1883 has returned to parents who lived then in Njuenene.
In works njuenenskogo the period (1883–1885) the originality of a creative manner of Van Gogh starts to be shown. The master writes dark paints, plots of its works are monotonous, in them the liking to peasants and compassion to their difficult life is felt. The first big picture created in njuenensky the period, – Eaters of a potato (1885, Amsterdam, Van Gogh's fund), – represents peasants at supper.
